Atlanta's first non-profit Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), has been providing quality facilities and services for retired seniors. Julie Parker, director of Dining Services for Canterbury Court, knew the community needed to update its antiquated point-of-service (POS) system to better-serve its residents. The old system did not offer the flexibility and accountability the community needed to keep up with changing demands. For instance, it was difficult to manage the cook-to-order process at the Grille. Staff members were having to write down orders, including all modifiers, and carry them to the kitchen. The community had no real accountability regarding meal plan usage.

With the Resident Choice system in place, Canterbury Court noticed an immediate increase in revenue and improved accountability that allowed the community to recoup the purchase price within six months. "The system paid for itself due to a 20 percent increase in revenue resulting from the flexibility, accountability, and meal tracking that Resident Choice provides," stated Parker. Canterbury Court has been able to increase resident satisfaction and significantly reduce total food costs as well by analyzing the helpful reports that are available. "The Resident Choice system is a great tool for forecasting. We use such reports as the Items Sold Report and Meal Plan Usage Report to determine exactly how many meals to prepare and what meals the residents truly enjoy the most," Parker said. "These reports and others have helped us increase participation and resident satisfaction, as well as decrease waste by not preparing too much food."
The Horizon system has also helped Canterbury Court operate the Grille and other dining venues more efficiently. Now, when orders are placed, they are printed on a kitchen printer, eliminating the extra manual steps that often resulted in errors. The menu grid allows unlimited items and modifiers which the previous system did not offer. "The staff and residents see real value in the system due to the additional choices that it provides," stated Parker. Residents appreciate having more menu items to choose from and additional services such as takeout. In addition to increased resident satisfaction, the employees enjoy using the system. Parker said, "The employees love how user-friendly Resident Choice is."
